Kieren Fallon landed his third winner of the week after driving 5-4 favourite Papal Bull home to a determined success in the King Edward VII Stakes.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained three-year-old got the better of a prolonged battle up the straight with the Dettori-ridden Red Rocks, who set a steady early pace.

Fallon was one of the first under pressure but always looked as if he would overhaul the long-time leader and he prevailed by a neck. Sixties Icon was a further two and a half lengths back in third.

Papal Bull was last seen when 10th in the Derby but he met with trouble in running that day under Robert Winston and Fallon was keen to renew his association.

Dettori tried to ride his rivals to sleep by setting a sedate pace but his mount had no answer to the son of Montjeu's turn of foot.

The third horse, who finished seventh in the Epsom Classic, showed improved form once again.

Fallon said: 'It wasn't so easy to get him settled as it was to get him going. He completely switched off with me and at halfway I was quite worried.

'It wasn't until I got to the three pole that I got confident. I thought he was going to do it easier but he's obviously a lazy little devil.

'He's a typical Montjeu. They seem to get better and better.

'He's got a big future, he's a playboy but great to ride. He's a natural and does everything for you.

'After today you have to think he's up there with the best of the three-year-old colts.'

Jamie McCalmont, racing manager to Red Rocks' owner Paul Reddam, said: ‘He ran a great race, he was just beaten by a better horse on the day.

'He wasn't inconvenienced by the faster ground - he'll go on anything and the winner won fair and square.

'I'll have to talk to Brian (Meehan) about plans but we could go for the Grand Prix de Paris.'

Noseda, trainer of the third, was also pleased.

He said: 'It was a great run, although he would have preferred softer ground, but it was a good and game performance. He might get further in time - let's see.'
