Tears were shed by the horse racing community today as the ashes of fans' favourite Best Mate were laid to rest at the scene of his greatest triumphs.
The champion racehorse, who died of a suspected heart attack while competing last month, was buried at the finishing post at Cheltenham Race Course, scene of his three Gold Cup wins.
Best Mate's owner Jim Lewis led the tributes today, despite the death of his wife Valerie, who passed away earlier this week.
Mr Lewis told fans gathered to watch the ceremony: "We all shared a part of the beautiful horse Best Mate, gone but not forgotten. Thanks, Matey."
A hush fell across the course and grandstand as Best Mate's ashes were buried.
The silence was broken by a lone piper who played Amazing Grace at the conclusion of the ceremony which took place before today's programme of racing.
Best Mate collapsed during a come-back race in Exeter after an injury lay-off.
The horse won the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Mr Lewis said Best Mate was an icon who combined the skill of an athlete with the bravery of a street-fighter.
