The more rain the merrier for Hussard Collonges

Peter Beaumont is hoping for lots of rain at Haydock Park to allow Hussard Collonges to make his seasonal debut in the Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase on Sunday.

The trainer is keen to get a run into the 8yo, who ran a tremendous race on his previous visit to the track when second to Truckers Tavern in the Peter Marsh Chase in January.

"It all depends on the ground. We want quite a lot of rain. He's a soft ground horse so just at present it's not fit for him to run. The same applies to quite a few of the others," said the trainer on Tuesday.

Hussards last run was in the Heineken Cup at Fairyhouse, which came after a disappointing run in the Blue Riband at Cheltenham, where he pulled up.

Beaumont has been happy with Hussard Collonges' condition since: "he's done nicely over the summer and he's in good form with himself," he said.

Despite the prolonged dry spell, Beaumont has been able to get plenty of work into the gelding. "We can work him all right here. He's fit for a run so we'll just to wait and see what happens," he added.
