Apprentices take centre stage at Downpatrick on Wednesday where they have two races all to themselves on a seven race card beginning at 2.45.
The Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap looks to be a wide open event where any one of eight horses could end up in the winners enclosure. Maraami, ridden by Cathy Gannon, will be a leading contender but preference goes to course winner Mount George. Despite his last effort, Noel Meade's charge had been running very consistently and should be involved at the business end of proceedings. Others with decent chances are Home Force, Charmente Femme and Sophiyah.
Niall Madden's Team Allstar has been performing extremely well over hurdles lately and should run a cracking race in the Mace Champion Apprentice Handicap. In-form Jamie Moriarty takes the ride and with running off this relatively low weight JP McManus's gelding should land this prize.
The final day of the Irish/Australian N.H. Jockey Challenge also takes place with the home side holding a narrow lead of 38 points to 34.
Irish team captain Paul Carberry should open up proceedings with a win for the Irish when he partners Sigma Techs in the maiden hurdle. The Kilbeggan bumper winner is bound to be well-schooled for this event.
The 3m handicap chase is a competitive event. Wall St Station is a course and distance winner having accounted for todays rival Oh Highly Likely on that occasion and a repeat performance is on the cards.
Dermot Weld sends Hip Pocket north for his first attempt at the larger obstacles in the 3m beginners chase and should have little trouble in disposing of the competition.
