Annual results announced today by the Tote UK reveal a healthy increase in the bookmaking firm's business with turnover up by an impressive 43 per cent.
The Tote's gross profit rose by 14.6 per cent to £96.7million with £10.7million being its contribution to the racing industry.
The Tote was created in 1928 by Act of Parliament to offer pool betting on horseracing. It is now also a leading bookmaker in Britain with a chain of 435 betting shops.
Tote Credit, its telephone betting operation is present on each of the country's 59 racecourses and through its website, tote.co.uk, it also offers an internet betting service.
Racecourse division turnover broke through the £100million level for the first time and total pool betting was up 16 per cent to £221million.
Peter Jones, chairman of the Tote, said: 'Overall, it has been a very good year for the Tote.'
