Dettori and Mamool win Yorkshire Cup

Mamool, given a peach of a ride by Frankie Dettori, came fast and late to claim Godolphin's fifth Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup. Godolphin have landed the Group Two contest in the past with Moonax (1995), Classic Cliche (1996), Kayf Tara (2000) and Marienbard (2001), and Mamool did not let the side down in this year's renewal.

Held up in last place as firstly Pugin and then Balakheri cut out the running at a good gallop, Mamool was always travelling sweetly and as the pace quickened early in the straight Dettori did not panic as Kevin Darley committed Bollin Eric.

Warrsan then took over two out as last season's St Leger winner cried enough, but by now Mamool had begun to take closer order and, making relentless progress down the outside, collared Clive Brittain's charge close home to score by half a length, with Bollin Eric four lengths back in third.

Mamool was giving the Dubai team only their second winner of the season and Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford added: 'There's nothing wrong with the horses, as I've always said. With the three-year-olds it has been a case of what you see is what you get, but we have some very nice older horses and this is one of them. The Gold Cup will be his next race. '
