Collonges Punchestown run depends on the ground

Hussard Collonges, one of four British entries for the Grade One Punchestown Heineken Gold Cup, could run in the race, weather permitting.

'I would like to get a run into him but it all depends on the ground. I shall not go on fast ground,' trainer Peter Beaumont said on Wednesday.

Hussard Collonges also holds an entry in the attheraces Gold Cup at Sandown on Saturday week and that contest is also being considered by Beaumont.

He said: 'If by some chance it came up soft at Sandown he could go there but if it doesn't come reasonable ground he won't go anywhere. He's got top weight at Sandown but it would need to be on the soft side.'

The eight-year-old ran dismally when a leading fancy for last month's Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, being pulled up after three out by Russ Garritty. However, he was later found to be suffering, like several of Beaumont's horses at the time, from a sore throat.

The Brandsby trainer now reports the gelding to have recovered from the setback. He said: 'He's fine now but he had a bad throat at Cheltenham. The horses are a lot better now and we had a winner at Hexham on Monday.'

The other British entries in the Punchestown contest on April 30 are Killusty, See More Business and Young Spartacus.
