Ryalux gets up to win an epic Scottish National

Ryalux pipped Stormez in thrilling finish to the Gala Casinos Daily Record Scottish Grand National at Ayr today.

Stormez looked the likely winner of the the £110,000 Showcase Handicap Chase over four miles and one furlong when Tony McCoy forced him to lead at the final fence.

He led on the run-in until the dying strides when Ryalux rallied under Richard McGrath to score for trainer Andy Crook. Ryalux (15-2) got the verdict by a neck from Stormez (6-1), trained by Martin Pipe who sent out Take Control to win 12 months ago.

The first two pulled well clear of the rest of the field with Spendid (12-1) staying on stoutly to deny Kerry Lads (40-1) for third place.

Gunther McBride, the 7-2 favourite, unshipped Richard Johnson at the second last when still in contention.

Afterwards the winning jockey, McGrath added: 'He's done it well. I wanted to follow Stormez, I jumped in front of him two out. I didn't want to be there so I was glad he went back in front of me. He was a bit slow over the last and I saw Stormez. When I knew I had something to run at, I knew I had a great chance.'
