Trainer Michael Hourigan, who had seen his star chaser Beef Or Salmon fall early in the Gold Cup, suffered another blow when his stable stalwart Dorans Pride fell fatally at the second fence in the Christie's Foxhunter Chase at Cheltenham today.
The 14-year-old won the 1995 Stayers' Hurdle as well as finishing third in the 1997 and 1998 Gold Cup. Hourigan said: "He died doing what he loved most. We tried to retire him but he just stood at the gate and every day he waited for us to come and get him."
Dorans Pride raced 62 times over jumps and won £632,538 in prizemoney.
