Local star Lancero wins Ulster National

The €25,000 Powers Ulster National attracted a large crowd to the northern venue where the locally-trained Lancero landed the 3m4f marathon for Jeremy Maxwell.

The 6yo gelding made steady headway under David Casey to lead after the final fence, and stayed on well on the uphill run to the line for a 3L verdict over last year's winner Back In Thyne.

'He had a slight lung infection after running poorly at Naas last time, and a course of antibiotics helped to clear it up,' said Maxwell. He added, he's an exceptional jumper, stays well and is suited by carrying under 10 stone.'

Third placed rider Danny Howard was given a two day suspension for careless riding after his mount hampered the runner-up soon after the last.
