First Gold set for Punchestown appearance

Racing action from Punchestown this weekend promises to provide many valuable clues for the remainder of the National Hunt Season. Sunday marks the fifth running of the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Steeplechase (Grade 1). This race has produced some thrilling spectacles in the past with top class winners such as Florida Pearl and Native Upmanship.

This year's race promises to be no exception and is being targeted as a return to action by Francois Doumen's First Gold. Other likely contenders include Native Upmanship and Alexander Banquet. Ted Walsh can choose between his Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Commanche Court and Rince Ri.

Saturday's Punchestown Card will feature the European Eventing Champion Handicap Hurdle where the Pat Hughes trained Sharp Act will be a popular fancy, following his recent second to subsequent Fairyhouse winner Over The First, at Clonmel last Month.

Commenting on the weekend's racing, Dick O'Sullivan, manager of Punchestown said: "We are looking forward to what will be a very exciting weekend of racing at Punchestown. The good weather forecast will allow racegoers a well overdue break from recent racing conditions and the Durkan Chase is sure to be the highlight of the racing season so far".

"Ground conditions at the track remain soft to heavy at present and even though the forecast is for dry and settled weather over the weekend, the moisture level in the ground will ensure a true test of stamina," observed Richie Galway.
