The Dermot Weld-trained Media Puzzle was awarded a 3lb penalty for the Tooheys Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 5 after easily winning today's Geelong Cup.
Media Puzzle smashed the course record for 12 furlongs in beating Requiem by three and a quarter lengths with Donarch a distant third. He ran 2 minutes and 25.92 seconds for the journey, bettering Chagemar's mark of 2 minutes and 26 seconds set in 1984.
Handicapper James Bowler raised his weight to 8st 4lb on the strength of the performance and jockey Damien Oliver immediately committed to the mount on Tuesday week.
