David Nicholls won the Tote Ayr Gold Cup for the third successive year when Funfair Wane took the valuable sprint handicap at 16-1. Funfair Wane, owned and bred by Jean Keegan, wife of Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan, ran out a neck winner from The Tatling (33-1) with Abbajabba (33-1) third and Attache (14-1) fourth.
Funfair Wane, formerly trained by Mick Channon, was always up with the pace on the stands side from , tall 16 as Forever Times took an early lead from Pic Up Sticks. High numbers enjoyed the edge throughout the six-furlong cavalry charge as Adrian Nicholls kicked for home inside the final quarter mile.
The Tatling staged a strong challenge in the final furlong but Funfair Wane had enough left to land the £65,000 first prize.
