Tony McCoy ended the day agonisingly one short of Richard Dunwoody's record when finishing a distant third on Mother Says at Newton Abbot. The champion jockey had earlier recorded a double on Rakaposhi Lass and Lunar Crystal to bring him within one win of the magic 1,699 winner mark.
His quest to be the winning-most jockey in National Hunt history moves to Uttoxeter tomorrow when he has five booked mounts.
McCoy's great rival Richard Johnson faces up to three months on the sidelines after breaking his right leg in a horror fall from Lincoln Place at Newton Abbot. Johnson broke the same leg in similar circumstances at Exeter 10 months ago.
