Former Derby winner dies aged 16

Nashwan, one of the great racehorses of the modern era, has died at Shadwell Stud, it was revealed today. The son of Blushing Groom, winner of the General Accident 2000 Guineas and Ever Ready Derby in what proved to be a memorable 1989 season, was humanely destroyed on Friday night after suffering complications following what was expected to be a minor operation on his right hind leg.

The loss of Nashwan is a second severe blow to Shadwell Stud, who earlier this year lost his half-brother Unfuwain.
