Top American jockey Jerry Bailey is set to partner one of Aidan O'Brien's runners in the Kentucky Derby if, as seems increasingly likely, Johannesburg and Castle Gandolfo make the journey to Churchill Downs for the May 4 race.
Johannesburg, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on dirt last season, lost his unbeaten record when he was pipped by Rebelline in the Gladness Stakes on his seasonal reappearance. Castle Gandolfo showed his well-being when breaking the track record in Lingfield's inaugural Foster's-International Trial Stakes on his 2002 bow.
"It looks likely that both horses will go to Kentucky," the Ballydoyle trainer told the Irish Times. "I imagine that Michael Kinane and Jerry Bailey will ride them."
