The Aidan O’Brien-trained Johannesburg, who won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park, was last night hailed as the best two-year-old to race in the USA in 2001. The unbeaten Irish colt, rated Europe's champion juvenile in the international classifications unveiled earlier this month, topped the American Experimental Free Handicap on a mark of 126lb.
Johannesburg won Group One races in Ireland, France and Britain last year before collecting the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park and is the first overseas two-year-old to head the US ratings since Arazi did so after winning the Juvenile in 1991.
