Mozart strikes winning note at York

Aidan O'Brien's Mozart showed he is the fastest horse in Europe with a remarkable victory in the five furlong Nunthorpe Stakes at York today, despite a slipping saddle. A battle with the best sprinters in America at the Breeders' Cup in October now beckons for the colt, who was giving Aidan O'Brien his sixth Group One win of the season in Britain.

But he came perilously close to disaster in the early stages here and only rewarded those who sent him off 4-9 favourite thanks to a miraculous ride from Michael Kinane. For the three-year-old's saddle slipped leaving the stalls and his jockey's main concern for most of the five-furlong trip was staying on board, rather than victory.
