O'Brien gains another Group One victory

Leading Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien gained another Group One victory today when Jamie Spencer produced King Charlemagne with a storming late burst to win the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. It was yet another success for the Irish-based Coolmore team over Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation with the latter's Three Points (Pat Eddery) beaten a neck in second.

Third place went to the Michael Jarvis-trained Kier Park (Philip Robinson) with John Gosden's Mount Abu (Olivier Peslier) fourth ahead of sole local contender Danger Over. O'Brien's other contender Minardi was sixth with Richard Hannon's Watching seventh and Tim Easterby's Hot Tin Roof eighth of the nine starters.

O'Brien said of the winner, who coupled with Minardi paid 4-5 on the PMU, "We have always rated this horse highly and the drop back in distance today was not a problem. He has plenty of pace."
