Tonight’s match is the first European Cup final between two teams from the same city. Until 1998 that wasn’t possible as only the champions of each country were eligible to play in the competition.
It is the fourth final involving two teams from the same country. Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 in 2000, AC Milan edged Juventus on penalties in 2003 and John Terry’s famous slip in another penalty shootout allowed Manchester United to claim their third title against Chelsea in 2008.
