Paris 2024: Kate O'Connor 19th after four heptathlon events

Ireland's Kate O'Connor is 19th overall after four rounds of the women's heptathlon at Paris 2024.

The Dundalk native finished seventh in her 100m hurdles heat at the Stade de France on Thursday morning before reaching a height of 1.77m in the high jump.

In the evening session, she had a shot put throw of 13.79 metres, the 14th best effort of the 22 competitors.

O'Connor wrapped up a long day by running a season's best time of 24.77 to finish fourth in her 200m heat.

It leaves her sitting in 19th but she has arguably her strongest event - the javelin - to look forward to tomorrow.

It consists of seven events: 100m hurdles, 200m, 800m, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin.

The first event of the day, the 100m hurdle heats, saw O'Connor line out in lane seven and finish seventh in a time of 14.08, accruing 967 points which left her 22nd overall in the standings.

O'Connor then took part in the high jump and on the third attempt at 1.77m, she was able to clear the mark but was unable to do so at 1.80 which was slightly below her career PB of 1.81.

A solid evening session then left her in upbeat mood ahead of Friday's climax.

"I came here and my goal was to not have any regrets from all the events and I walked away from that hurdles and was like, damn it, I didn't take in the crowd and stuff," O'Connor said afterwards.

"But from the high jump on I made sure to enjoy the experience and just be me, just enjoy it and lap up the whole experience because it’s another four years before it’ll come around again."

Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson leads the way with her team-mate Jade O'Dowda, younger sister of Republic of Ireland men's senior international footballer Callum O'Dowda, in 17th.

The silver medal position is currently held by Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam and USA's Anna Hall is in bronze.
