Ireland's Cathal Doyle has become a major beneficiary of the new repechage system in athletics by progressing to the semi-finals of the 1500m after winning his backdoor race in Paris.

However, Luke McCann, who raced in the same repechage heat as Doyle, and Andrew Coscoran failed to advance.

Doyle clocked 3:34.92 in winning his heat, but McCann wasn't able to snatch one of the top-three places that would have seen him through, finishing in seventh.

Irish record holder Coscoran finished a desperately disappointing 12th in the second of the two heats.

"That was class," Doyle said of his win. "I was just so much more relaxed today.

"I came in with the same mindset I've had all season - 'I'm going to win this' - even if I have to run hard.

"I felt great the whole way. I think it was a dress rehearsal yesterday. It just felt so much better."
