Rachael Darragh said she was left gutted after narrowly losing out to Switzerland's Jenjira Stadelmann on her Olympic Games debut.
The Donegal native had match point in the second set, after winning the first 21-13. However, Stadelmann, a European Games bronze medallist, survived before going on to win the set 24-22.
"I knew I was an underdog going into that game, she's a European Games bronze medallist, I knew I could throw everything at it and completely go for it," Darragh told RTÉ Sport.
"I had my chances in the second set, I had a set point there and I'm really gutted I didn't take that chance, but I'm also very proud of my performance," she added.
Stadelmann showed her experience in the final set and was able to overcome Darragh 21-15 to secure her first win of Group L.

Darragh said: "I feel, especially in the third set, I had a bit of a rhythm after the break but she used that experience and slowed it down, and really took advantage.
"It kind of threw me a bit of the end, a lot of silly mistakes, unforced errors that I'll be replaying in my head all evening, but she's a great player and well done to her today."
Darragh faces a much more difficult task tomorrow afternoon when she will go head-to-head with 2016 Olympic champion Carolina Marin from Spain.
Marin dispatched of Stadelmann by two sets to nil on Sunday in their opening group game.
"She's the Olympic champion from Rio, I can completely go at that again and just try give my best performance like I did today," Darragh said.
"I'm looking forward to it, but it's a whole new step up, Olympic champion, she's here to win gold," she added.
