Liam Jegou is into the canoe slalom semi-finals at the Paris Games after coming through a gruelling day of action in Vaires-sur-Marne.
Jegou had an under-par first run, finishing 17th in a time of 102.67 seconds. He needed to find an improvement in his second outing and he did, shaving almost nine seconds off his time. Jegou did lose six seconds due to three penalties, but his 16th place overall was enough to send him into Monday's semis.
"It was such a tough day," he told RTÉ Sport.
"It was probably the hardest day I've had on the water in my my life.

"The first run, I was alright at the top but just pushing everything and I gassed out at the bottom. I was really poor technically all round.
"The second run was a bit better. I pushed a lot hard to get closer with the raw time. What a tough day."
There was disappointment for Madison Corcoran in the women's kayak (K1). She picked up four penalty seconds in a second run of 115.93 but even without them it wouldn't have been enough to make the semi-finals after the 21-year-old lost a lot of time at one of the red (reverse) gates.
Corcoran finished 24th of 25 competitors.
