Team Ireland's Chef de Mission at the Olympics, Tricia Heberle, has said that keeping athletes safe in Tokyo is all about vigilance.
Heberle said that she has witnessed people not adhering to the guidelines in the athletes village and has encouraged athletes and coaches to call out such behaviour.
The Chef de Mission believes that, while athletes need to take personal responsibility, they should also be aware of their surroundings.
Speaking to RTÉ Sport, Heberle said: "There are a lot of people that maybe aren't as vigilant, maybe are cutting corners so we've been asking our athletes and staff to make sure that they are protecting themselves.
"We have seen people in the village not wearing masks. We've seen groups not social distancing. There will be positive tests and we hope that we're not dealing with positive tests. We'll be doing everything we can to avoid that.
"We are in a position that we can report it. It has two levels, we are encouraging our group to call out each other. You've got to be prepared to actually challenge people.
"I think you can appropriately challenge other groups. I had a lift situation the other day, four people in the lift. I physically walked to the front and stopped people coming in. I said four is enough."
Heberle said they can report breaches in real time and can report to the organising committee through the chef de mission meetings but added "the most important thing is to focus on our behaviours so we don't have people criticising us."
