Ireland's Ciara Everard has failed to qualify from the heats of the women's 800 metres in Rio.

The Kilkenny athlete finished eighth in the first of eight heats after being unable to live with the steady increase in pace over the final 400m.

Her time of 2:07.91 was well outside her personal best and she admitted that a lack of race sharpness following a period out with injury meant she failed to live up to her potential.

"It's a tough place to be not being at your best coming a championship, but it has been an amazing experience," Everard told RTÉ Sport.

"I was out for a long time with the injury and we really played up the pros and cons of coming. I only had three or four weeks behind me but I felt like it was enough to do myself justice today.

"I felt like I stayed positive in the race, I know I'm fit and strong but it was probably down to the lack of race practice which was always going to be a risk.

"Obviously that wasn't what I wanted today, but as an athlete you have to take the cards you're given and play your hand as best as possible and unfortunately that's all I had today.

“I love competing. It’s been a tough summer watching the Europeans from the sidelines. I was so up for it today even off limited preparation.

"It’s championships like this that gets you through the winter months. This is what it’s all about. I’m annoyed I wasn’t able to do myself justice but it is what it is."

Everard's heat was won by Britain's Lysney Sharp, while gold medal favourite Caster Semenya of South Africa coasted through her heat in a time of 1:59.31.
