Irish sailors Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern booked their place in the 49er medal race at the Rio Games, after a stunning victory pushed them up to eighth overall on Tuesday evening.

They had been seventh in the fleet, with the top ten to qualify for Thursday’s medal race, going in to today's action.

They were 19th in Race 10 and 20th in race 11 but finished a flourish in Race 12, earning a victory that lifted them from 12th to eighth and one more go on the water in Brazil.

Andrea Brewster and Saskia Tidey were 12th overall going into today and that's where they finished, following an eighth, a 13th and closing 12th failed to lift them into the top ten.

Earlier on Tuesday Annalise Murphy won Olympic silver following a superb performance in the Laser Radial Medal Race, where the Dubliner finished in fifth place.

Last Friday, Cork brothers Gary and Paul O’Donovan strained every sinew in their bodies to snatch a superb silver on the waters of Rio.
