Rio 2016's many problems are mounting after a forest fire threatened to damage the mountain bike venue.

The fire started in scrub land behind the Deodoro shooting venue in the north of the city at approximately 4pm local time yesterday, and was quickly fanned by a strong breeze towards the mountain bike course.

Fortunately, the wind changed direction and rain arrived to dampen the flames, but a full assessment of the damage will not be made until later today.

A statement from Rio 2016's organising committee said: "The goal now is to prevent the fire reaching the surrounding community.

"Rio 2016 is assessing the impact on the mountain bike course. There were no injuries."

Cycling's world governing body, the UCI, said it was aware of the fire but understood it was now "under control".

It denied reports that the venue had been evacuated of athletes as there were no athletes on site at the time.

The mountain bike races take place over the weekend, with the women's on Saturday and the men's on Sunday.
