Sinead Lynch and Claire Lambe’s attempt to land an Olympic medal has ended in disappointment in the women’s lightweight sculls final in Rio.
The Irish women finished sixth with the Netherlands’ Isle Paulis and Maaike Head scooping gold ahead of Canada in second and China third for the bronze.
Canadians Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee took an early lead before the Chinese duo of Wenyi Huang and Feihong Pan went in front from 200m, however the Irish pairing lagged behind in sixth.
At the halfway and three-quarter stage Lynch and Lambe stayed last just behind fifth-placed New Zealand, the reigning world champions.
They couldn’t get past the New Zealanders in the last 500m and so remained in last spot going over the finish point.
