Action in Rio continues apace, with Annalise Murphy edging closer to a medal in the laser radial.

  • The Dubliner sits second in the overall rankings after four of 10 races in the Women’s Laser Radial class. Race 3 was her best of the day as she steadily improved her position from 7th to 4th at the finish.
  • Race 4 saw her round the first three marks in second position before coming home in seventh.

Murphy is five points behind leader Lijia Xu (CHN) and a point ahead of third placed sailor Anne-Marie Rindom (DEN) without counting her 13th place finish in Race 2.

Finn Lynch had a bright start to Race 3 of the Men’s Laser class, sailing in the top 10 through the first two marks before racing in 15th from Mark 3 through to the finish line.

  • David Oliver Joyce proved no match for the illusive Azeri fighter Albert Selimov at Rio 2016 on Tuesday night as the world number two triumphed via a unanimous decision.

  • Rower Sanita Puspure missed out on a place in the single sculls semi-finals by just .65 of a second in Rio.

The 34-year-old finished in fourth place, with only the top three qualifying, in what was regarded as the toughest heat.

  • Michael O’Reilly has apologised to his Team Ireland team-mates after admitting to taking a supplement that has ended his Olympic Games in Rio.

  • Germany's Michael Jung claimed his second consecutive individual eventing gold medal on Sam after posting two clear rounds in the final show jumping phase this afternoon, with Ireland’s Jonty Evans putting in a strong performance on Cooley Rorke's Drift to finish ninth.

Reigning Olympic champions Germany proved too much to handle for the Irish men’s hockey team, winning their Pool B match 3-2 despite some fine play from the boys in green.

  • Nicholas Quinn and Shane Ryan put in impressive performances on day 4 of the swimming as Quinn won his heat and Ryan touched second in his - but both failed to progress

  • Michael Phelps has won a 21st Olympic gold with a dominant victory in the 200 metres butterfly in Rio. South African Le Clos shocked Phelps by winning gold ahead of his idol, in Phelps' signature event, at the London 2012 Games.

Phelps had won the title at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and reclaimed it with a block to wall victory in one minute 53.36 seconds.

  • Katie Ledecky of the USA won the gold medal in the final of the Women's 200m freestyle to claim her second individual gold at these Games.

  • In Weightlifting a gold medal and a new world record for China's Weng Dei in the women's 63kg

  • The majestic Simone Biles landed the first of a possible five Olympic gymnastic golds in Rio by helping the United States win the women's team title on Tuesday night.

Biles produced the best vault, beam and floor routines of the competition as the US led from start to finish, finally winning by a huge margin of more than eight points.

The US team, also comprising Lauren Hernandez, Alexandra Raisman, Gabrielle Douglas and Madison Kocian, took gold with a score of 184.897, with Russia taking silver and China bronze.

  • An unpredictable Olympic tennis tournament claimed its biggest scalp of all as Serena Williams crashed out in the third round of the women's singles.

The world number one appeared to have a shoulder problem and was close to tears as she lost 6-4 6-3 to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.

  • China's Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia claimed gold in the women's synchronized 10 metre platform diving event at the Rio Games on Tuesday, with Malaysia and Canada respectively taking the silver and bronze medals as the venue's pool turned a bright green hue.

Chen, competing in her third summer Olympics, has won every title in the synchronized 10m platform event since 2006.
