On the first Monday of Olympic competion in Rio de Janeiro, Paddy Barnes' quest for a third Olympic hurdle came to an abrupt halt as he lost out on a split decision to Spain's Samuel Carmona Heredia.

Barnes lost the first round of the last-32 light-flyweight bout to his aggressive rival before tieing it up overall in the second. He looked to have done enough to edge the fight in the final round but two of the three judges plumped for the Spaniard, ending the 29-year-old's chances of becoming the first Irish Olympian to win medals at three consecutive games.

Annalise Murphy made a strong start to her Olympic mission with a first and 14th in the opening two Women's Laser Radial Class races. The Irish sailor ended the day in fourth place, but was later bumped up to third in the overall standings after China's Xu Lijia was disqualified from race 2 for an infringement.

China's Sun Yang won gold in the men's 200m freestyle. Sun, who served a lenient doping suspension between London 2012 and Rio, won in one minute 44.65 seconds.

Lilly King of the United States won gold in the women's 100m breaststroke in an Olympic record of 1:04.93. Controversial Russian Yulia Efimova, who has been booed at the pool after her late challenge to be included in the Games despite being initially banned by the International Olympic Committee had to settle for silver.

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won the women's O100 metres backstroke to claim her second gold of the Rio Games, edging out Kathleen Baker of the United States.
