Sanita Puspure was among the first Team Ireland representatives in action in the women’s single sculls heats. The Latvia-born rower qualified for the quarter-finals by finishing second in her heat

Dan Martin, the top ranked Irish rider in world road racing, and Nicholas Roche both finished outside of the top 10 in the road race. 

Padraig McCarthy was the first of our equestrians in action. He completed his dressage with a score of 46.80. Clare Abbott scored 47.00.

London Olympian Kieran Behan also gets his Games under way today in the artistic gymnastics. That event starts at 2.30pm but the 27-year-old is expected to go through his routines - the Pommel and cycle through The Floor, The Vault, The Rings, The Parallel Bars, The High Bar - after 10pm. 

Ireland’s hockey team (above) were beaten 3-2 by India in Group B.

Swimmer Nicholas Quinn finished fourth in his 100m breaststroke heat. He was using that swim as a warm-up for his preferred distance of 200m.
