New England Patriots safety Nate Ebner has secured a place on the USA’s rugby sevens squad for Rio 2016.

Ebner, who won the Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2014, is currently on a leave of absence but is due to return to the franchise after the Olympics.

A latecomer to American Football, Ebner represented the US in rugby at underage level and became the youngest ever player to represent the national side in rugby sevens before turning to America’s most popular sport in his junior year at Ohio State University.

The 27-year-old features on a 12-man roster, with the sevens competition scheduled to get under way on 6 August.
