Catriona Cuddihy says she will appeal the decision to drop her from the Ireland’s women’s 4x400m relay team on the day of the Olympic deadline.

On Saturday, Cuddihy was told by Athletics Ireland that she would not be included in the relay team for the London Games, and was to be replaced by Joanna Mills.

Cuddihy raced in Sunday’s 400m final at the National Championships, finishing fifth behind her sister Joanne Cuddihy, and three other members of the relay team, Marian Heffernan, Michelle Carey and Claire Bergin.

Mills, meanwhile, didn’t race, as she was preparing to compete at this week’s World Junior Championships in Barcelona. However, she found out on Saturday that she would be given Cuddihy’s place after lodging a successful appeal against her earlier exclusion from the team.

Cuddihy has confirmed that she will appeal the decision by Athletics Ireland: “All I’ve done is inform them that I would like to make an appeal, and I’m waiting for them to get back to me. I haven’t put in the grounds of that appeal yet, only that I was appealing.”
