Jason Smyth has failed to make the 100m Olympic standard before the deadline for the London Games.

Smyth ran twice over the weekend in a bid to make the 10.18 second time, first in Lougborough on Saturday, then at the National Championships on Sunday in Santry.

The 100m and 200m Paralympic champion and world record holder clocked 10.63 and 10.47 in Loughborough, well outside the standard.

The Derryman then lost the National Championship final to Paul Hession in a time of 10.38, with Hession clocking 10.37.

Smyth got a fine start in Santry, helped by a one metre per second following wind, but Hession reeled him in the closing stages. In the semi-final, Smyth only managed 10.40.

The Paralympian had looked on course to make the time when he posted 10.24 in the US in May, however, his form dipped to the extent that he only clocked 10.47 and 10.52 at the recent European Championships.
