Boxing and sailing produce medals for Ireland

Ireland’s only medal in sailing at any Games came courtesy of David Wilkins and James Wilkinson at the 1980 Moscow Games.

The Irish duo claimed silver in the Flying Dutchman class.

HUGH RUSSELL

Belfast boxer Russell won a bronze medal for Ireland in flyweight boxing at the Moscow Games.

Russell defeated Samir Khenyab of Iraq 5-0 in his first fight, before taking out Tanzania’s Emmanuel Mlundwa 5-0. He then beat Yo Ryon-Sik 3-2, before losing 5-0 to Bulgaria’s Peter Lessov in the semi-finals.
