Belfast’s John McNally won Ireland’s only medal at the 1952 Games in Helsinki when he won the silver medal in the bantamweight boxing division.
McNally was the first person from Belfast, and the first Irish boxer, to win a medal at the Olympics.
He had a first-round bye in Finland, before defeating Alejandro Ortuoste of the Philippines 3-0.
He then beat Vincenzo Dall’Osso of Italy 3-0. Next up he outpointed, 3-0, South Korea’s Gang Jun-Ho in the semi-final.
He controversially lost his final bout to Finland’s Pentti Hämäläinen 2-1.
