Ireland won a solitary medal at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. It came courtesy of Jim McCourt, who won lightweight boxing bronze.
The Northern Irish boxer lost a very tight semi-final bout to the Russian Velikton Barannikov, on a 3-2 scoreline.
McCourt was renowed for his defence and counter-punching, was rated the world’s number one amateur boxer for four years, and was inducted into the Irish Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame.
