Ireland’s Tori Pena has qualified for the pole vault at the London 2012 Olympics after triumphing at the Beach Track & Field Classic at Cerritos College.
The Finn Valley athlete won the event with a vault of 4.50m and went agonisingly close to clearing 4.60m.
Elsewhere, Irish 400m record holder Joanne Cuddihy claimed the Melbourne Track Classic in 52.37 seconds.
Her sister Catriona, who is targeting a place on the women’s 4x400m team, set a personal best at the meeting with a time of 55.83.
Leevale’s Ciaran O’Lionaird competed in the 800m race at the Wilson Notre Dame Invitation meeting on Saturday in order to fine tune his speed in preparation for the World Indoor Championships which take place in Istanbul next weekend.
The Cork man finished second in a personal best of 1:48.40.
Tallaght AC’s Anthony Lieghio was also in action at that meet, winning his race in 1:49.34.
