Sonia O'Sullivan will be the first Olympic torchbearer through Dublin when it arrives in the city in June.
The President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey, also confirmed that Olympic medallists Michael Carruth and Wayne McCullough will be involved in handing over the torch at the border. Schoolchildren from Newry and Dundalk will also take part.
A short relay will take place in Howth, where the headquarters of the Olympic Council is located before it is taken to Dublin city centre.
However, it has been confirmed that plans for a special concert in Dublin to mark the occasion have been cancelled due to the financial circumstances.
The Minister of State with Responsibility for Sport, Michael Ring, said the decision was made following talks with the Olympic Council of Ireland and Dublin City Council.
But he said he expected thousands of people to line the streets of Dublin to witness the event.
