Andrey Silnov of Russia won the men's high jump gold medal at the Olympics on Tuesday.

Silnov jumped a best of 2.36m but failed three times at 2.42m in an attempt to better the Olympic record of 2.39m set by American Charles Austin at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Germaine Mason of Britain won silver with 2.34m on countback from Russian Yaroslav Rybakov, who took bronze.

Defending champion Stefan Holm of Sweden could only manage fourth spot with 2.32m.
