Gymnast He Wenna won China's first Olympic trampolining gold medal Monday after defending champion Anna Dogonadze of Germany tripped over during her routine and came last.
He claimed gold ahead of Canada's Karen Cockburn and Ekaterina Khilko of Uzbekistan.
The reigning women's world champion, and Sydney 2000 gold medallist, Irina Karavaeva finished fifth.
He entered the field as an unfancied novice and said she enjoyed the underdog status.
‘I received my medal calmly because there weren't huge expectations on me, since I am a new and young member,’ she said.
Cockburn, who won a silver medal in Athens and a bronze in Sydney, said she was amazed at the volume created by the 18,000-strong crowd at Beijing's National Indoor Stadium.
‘I'm still kind of in shock,’ she said. ‘It's a really stressful situation competing out there. We're not used to huge crowds.
‘Coming out with my third medal in my third Olympic Games. It's still kind of a shock to me and I can't wait to celebrate with my family.’
The men's trampoline final will take place Tuesday, with China favourite to score another gold.
