Ireland's David Gillick finished in fourth place in the last heat of the 400m qualifying round on Sunday, but failed to post a sufficiently quick time to progress to the semi-finals.
Defending champion Jeremy Warriner of the USA led the heat from start to finish and was never in trouble.
Wariner was stuck out in lane nine but powered away from the field in the opening 300m and was able to ease down in the home straight.
25-year-old Gillick ran a strong first 200m and was in contention in the home straight, but he could not make up the ground on Tabarie Henry of the US Virgin Isles and Cedric van Branteghem of Belgium, who finished second and third to qualify.
Gillick's time of 45.83 was not enough to see him through as one of the three fastest losers from the seven heats.
Christopher Brown of the Bahamas was the fastest qualifier from all of the heats, recording an impressive time of 44.79.
Brown won a second heat which saw four athletes go under 45 seconds on what was looking a very fast track.
LaShawn Merritt also cruised through his heat as he settled in the inside lane and cruised round at half pace, all but walking over the line in 44.96sec.
One high profile casualty was Grenada's Alleyne Francique as the 32-year-old two-time world indoor champion and fourth in the 2004 Olympic final bowed out.
