Guo wins women's 10m Air Pistol gold

World number one Guo Wenjun overcame a hesitant start to win the Olympic women's 10m Air Pistol gold medal with a new Games record on Sunday.

There was also an emotional bronze medal for Georgia's Nino Salukvadze whose third place finish came just hours after the entire Georgian squad had considered withdrawing from the Games in protest at Russia's role in the bloody conflict over South Ossetia.

Guo, 24, finished with 492.3 points to better the previous Olympic record of 490.1 set by Olga Klochneva of Russia at Atlanta in 1996.

Natalia Paderina of Russia, who led after the qualification round with a new Olympic record of 391, faltered in the 10-shot final to take the silver medal with 489.1 points.

Salukvadze claimed the bronze as Athens Olympic gold medallist Olena Kostevych failed to make the final.

It was China's second shooting gold medal in three events so far after Pang Wei won the men's 10m Air Pistol title on Saturday.

Guo, the reigning World and Asian champion, finished the qualification round a point behind Paderina, a lead big enough in shooting to give the Chinese girl nervous moments.

But she kept her focus in the final, going less than 10 points in only two of her 10 shots, while Paderina had five sub-10 scores with a lowest of 8.5 with her second shot.

Chinese shooters are expected to dominate the 15-event competition at the state-of-the art Beijing Shooting Hall and Ranges on the outskirts of the capital.
