Nicholas Roche sprinted to victory in the first stage of the GP Internacional Paredes Roda do Moveis in Portugal yesterday.

The 23-year-old beat fellow Credit Agricole rider Jeremy Hunt and Francisco Pacheco of Barbot-Siper, who finished third, in a bunch finish.

The win gives Roche, son of former Tour de France champion Stephen, the yellow jersey and a four second advantage going into today's stage, as well as an automatic place at the Olympic games in Beijing later this year.

Roche also picked up enough points through the stage to lead the points classification.

Thanks to Roche and Hunt's efforts, Credit-Agricole also lead the team classification.
