Kenteris testifies in front of prosecutors

Disgraced Greek sprinter Kostadinos Kenteris testified for nearly three hours in front of Athens prosecutors today in connection with the doping affair that led to his controversial departure from the Olympics.

Kenteris quit the Olympics on August 18 after failing to show up at a drugs test on the eve of the Games' August 13 opening ceremony.

A few hours after IOC officials failed to find Kenteris and training partner Ekaterini Thanou, an Olympic silver medalist in the women's 100m in Sydney, the two athletes claimed to have been involved in a motorbike accident, which legal sources said they could have faked to avoid the test.

Kenteris, men's 200-metre champion in Sydney, entered the court building in central Athens through a side door to avoid journalists.

The two athletes, who for several years have managed to avoid being tested for illegal drugs, have claimed they are clean. The prosecutors are also investigating the nutritional supplement businesses of the sprinters' controversial coach Christos Tzekos.
