Germany's Birgit Fischer won her eighth Olympic gold medal at the age of 42 when her K4 crew beat world champions Hungary in a thrilling final today.
The German crew of Fischer, Maike Nollen, Katrin Wagner and Carolin Leonhardt finished less than a metre ahead of Hungary after coming from behind to snatch victory on the line. Ukraine finished third.
Fischer won her first Olympic gold as an 18-year-old in Moscow in 1980 and has not ruled out competing in Beijing in 2008.
Hungary, world champions since 1999, also took silver at the Sydney Games in 2000.
