Ireland's James Nolan has qualifiled for the semi-finals of the 1,500 metres after coming eighth in the first heat as Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj showed he has recovered from respiratory problems to win in a time of 3:37:86.

Nolan finished well back in eighth but his time of three minutes 41.14 seconds proved enough for him to qualify as one of the nine fastest losers.

Bernard Lagat, the fastest man in the world this year, survived a knock to qualify in heat two. The Kenyan, with a season's best of three minutes 27.40 seconds, was clipped by American Alan Webb 300 metres from the end, partially dislodging his left shoe.

He struggled on with the shoe half off before managing to kick it free 100 metres from the end and then accelerated to finish second behind Spain's Reyes Estevez.

Britain's Michael East won the third and final heat in the fastest time of the night, 3:37.37.

The semi-finals are on Sunday with the final next Tuesday.
