Japan's Kosuke Kitajima defeated arch-rival Brendan Hansen in the men's 200 metres breaststroke to silence his American critics and win his second gold medal of the Olympics.
Angered at American accusations he had used an illegal dolphin kick in his charge to the 100 gold at the weekend, Kitajima stormed to victory in a needle race to clock an Olympic record of two minutes, 09.44 seconds.
“I knew that stuff about the kick was rubbish,” said the 21-year-old after securing a repeat of the 100 and 200 double he achieved at last year's world championships.
