Ronaldo & Iraq burn brightest

Cristiano Ronaldo was on target for Portugal on the day his Manchester United teammates slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

The 19-year-old winger put Portugal on their way to a 2-1 victory over Morocco and displayed his full range of tricks in a dazzling performance.

United reluctantly let the youngster join Portugal's Olympic squad but would have welcomed his invention and goal threat at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal on 40 minutes, and Ricardo Costa's 73rd-minute header put them 2-0 up, with Morocco replying late on through Bouabid Bouden.

That was in Group D, from which Iraq secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory against Costa Rica.

The Iraqis are emerging as the footballing sensation of this tournament, having defeated Portugal 4-2 in their opening match.

Daniele de Rossi's magnificent bicycle kick was the highlight of Italy's 3-2 victory over Japan in Group B.

The defender leapt off the ground and acrobatically volleyed home after three minutes, finding just a foot of space between defenders to blast into the net from eight yards.

Parma frontman Alberto Gilardino struck Italy's two other goals, with YukiAbe's splendid free-kick and Daiki Takamatsu's late goal being Japan's scant consolation as their hopes of advancing were killed off.

With two teams to qualify from each group to the last eight, the Italians face competition from Paraguay and Ghana.

Ghana beat the Paraguayans 2-1 on Sunday, but all three are in with a chance of going through.

The Azzurri take on Paraguay in their last group match, on Wednesday.
